Bicester Fossils walking football celebrates #OneWorld campaign

Active Oxfordshire joined BBC Radio Oxford in Bicester this week (Wednesday, 19th December) to see Bicester Fossils take part in a special game of walking football.
The session was part of the national #OneWorld campaign commemorating the end of the First World War, and Bicester Fossils were selected as one of five grassroots projects across Oxfordshire to take part.
To commemorate the end of the war and the famous "truce" football match played on Christmas Day 1914, acclaimed artist Mark Wallinger designed a special edition football. Active Oxfordshire were able to bring the #OneWorld campaign to a local level and distribute five special edition footballs to Oxfordshire Mind, SOFEA, Oxford City Casuals, the Oxford City Council Youth Ambition Project and the Bicester Fossils.
Bicester Fossils, who are supported by Cherwell District Council, were more than happy to be involved in the #OneWorld campaign.
For some players, playing with the special edition football allowed them to celebrate family members who had served during the Great War 1914-1918. Fossils regular Trevor Sullivan even brought along with him a picture and a medal that has been presented to his grandfather John.
"Grassroots projects such as Bicester Fossils are great as promote more than physical activity," said Hazel Walsh, Active Oxfordshire coaching and workforce manager, there to talk about the project for the BBC cameras.
"Speaking to the Bicester Fossils here today I've heard some amazing stories that highlight how important physical activity is for mental wellbeing and community, as well as health. Active Oxfordshire's vision to make everyone in Oxfordshire physically active is hugely important to helping partners make sessions like this happen".
Bicester Fossils players backed this up. Regular player John Prior told the team that sessions like this had given him a "new lease of life".
Other players said the walking football has helped improve their mental and physical wellbeing while giving them a new social life, helped them to lose weight and to "help me feel 21 again!".
Bicester Fossils next move is to head off on a tour to Portugal.
