Park Club Willowbrook launches first Escape Pain course in Oxfordshire

Park Club Willowbrook launches first Escape Pain course in Oxfordshire, supporting adults living with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.

Park Club Willowbrook, operated by charity leisure management company, Soll Leisure, is launching the first NHS-derived ESCAPE-Pain course starting on March 11th 2019. The course is one of many initiatives organised as part of the Park Club's Active Health scheme, using exercise as a tool to overcome and manage health conditions.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of disability within the community, and is associated with age and obesity, with an estimated 9 million people in the UK living with the condition. Inactivity, obesity and a longer life span are expected to increase the prevalence of OA. However exercise has been clinically proven to benefit those suffering with the condition by decreasing pain, increasing function, increasing well-being and improving quality of life.

ESCAPE-Pain is an innovative, award-winning programme for people aged 45+ with chronic joint pain of the hip and knee. The programme runs over 6 weeks with participants attending twice a week to spend, on average, 15 minutes learning the facts vs myths about their condition and 45 minutes engaging in light physical exercise to better manage their condition.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from participants completing the course stating, "It has really changed my life in the way that I manage my knee pain, and the confidence it has given me", and "I started barely able to walk with two sticks and in constant pain. It has taken time, nearly two months, but today I am walking without help and generally pain free." This is a truly life-changing course for the participants in that it teaches and empowers them to manage their own condition.
