Over 2022/23, Active Travel has supported 16 projects, ranging from the installation of benches in outdoor spaces, to the development of cycling skills and confidence within those who have faced barriers to cycling. Projects funded by Active Travel have worked with residents and communities who face great challenges when wanting to travel in an active way, such as asylum seekers, disabled residents, women and non-binary people, and families from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Newly launched Active Neighbourhood Scans will bring people together to create happy, healthy, and active places to live

Oxford is the second most unequal city in the country, with 10 of 83 wards being within the top 20% most deprived areas in the country, and having low outcomes in terms of childhood obesity and physical and mental health in adults. People in lower socioeconomic groups are twice as likely to be inactive as those in the highest socioeconomic groups.

We take a place-based approach with the aims of creating equal opportunities in priority neighbourhoods where residents face more barriers to physical activity, to create happy, healthy, and active communities, and Active Neighbourhood Scans can support with this. Read More »

A bike is a ‘symbol of freedom’: the magic and beauty of a community project

Sanctuary Wheels turns 1!

In May 2022, with the help of Cyclox, Asylum Welcome and a number of other amazing Oxfordshire-based organisations, we launched Sanctuary Wheels to provide bikes to refugees and asylum seekers across the county. With a shared goal of making Oxfordshire a more welcoming home for those who have moved here to escape from conflict, over 600 bikes have been donated, repaired, and given to refugees in Oxfordshire.
